The Fishing

The Sea of Cortez is known for generations as home of some of the worlds best angling and by mid May the winter winds have settled down and the roosterfishing is in high gear. Roosters are ridiculously fast, downright angry and come into the shallows looking to smash a meal. These admirable qualities make pez gallo a great gamefish on both fly and surf gear. Obviously, the surf guy covers more distance and the fly guy may have an advantage in fooling the fish. Both methods are effective. The same gear we use in Rhody surf is effective in Baja 10 1/2 ft surf sticks and pencil poppers for the surfcaster and 10 wts for the fly fisherman.

The Saltwater Edge has teamed up the Captain Jeff DeBrown of Reel Baja who has over two decades of experience fishing the Baja Peninsula. We will be arriving on May 13th and departing on the 19th. Historically this time offers good numbers of roosterfish and the under appreciated jack crevalle, consistent weather and a variety of other gamefish including striped marlin, yellowtail and dorado just offshore. The trip has been designed to take advantage of the wonderful variety of species available.

The Lodging

Our trip includes six nights lodging at the very comfortable Rancho Leonero Resort set on 700 acres of Mexican Rancho with almost 2 miles of private beach. This fishing focused lodge has a tropical-style elegance with native flagstone and palapa-roofed cottages, and comfortable, airy rooms. There is fishing right out front so it’s easy to get in some extra casts before or after enjoying an authentic Baja dinner. Or you could sit a cold beverage overlooking the ocean while eating civiche made from your days catch. That is quite a treat! The fishing portion will include four shore guided days and one offshore day. You can add offshore days with a modest up charge. Also included is airport transfer from Cabo San Lucas International Airport, all meals as well as the required Mexican fishing permits.

The Courtyard at Rancho Leonaro

Why We Love It:

The Baja Peninsula is incredibly scenic and Rancho Leonaro is a very comfortable place to spend some tome. At the ranch there is fishing right out front so it’s easy to get in some extra casts before or after enjoying an authentic Baja dinner. Or you could sit a cold beverage overlooking the ocean while eating civiche made from your days catch. That is quite a treat!

The Numbers:

The trip cost based on double occupancy is $2,995.00 per person with the customary ratio of two anglers per guide.  The fishing portion will include four shore guided days and one offshore day. You can add offshore days with a modest up charge. Also included are airport transfers from Cabo San Lucas International Airport, all meals as well as the required Mexican fishing permits.

A 50% deposit per angler of the total package cost is due within 14 days of booking to secure the reservation. Full payment is then due 90 days prior to departure. You can pay by personal check or by calling us with your credit card information.
